Allosaurus, the family's type species
Allosauridae (name given by the american paleontologist Othniel Charls Marsh) is a family of bipedal theropod dinosaurs that lived in the late Jurassic period.
They were medium to large carnivorous dinosaurs, with large, crested skulls and three-fingered hands, and were the most successful predators of their time, being succeeded however by Carcharodontosaurids in the Southern Hemisphere and by Tyrannosaurids in the Northern Hemisphere in the Late Cretaceous era.
Allosaurid remains have been found in North America, Africa and Asia.
